Citrawarna 2006
|
|
Citrawarna 2006. Colours of Malaysia festival showcases various traditional performances from all ethnic groups in Malaysia. I couldn't wait for this year's Citrawarna because the venue now is at Dataran Merdeka, as compared to Stadium Negara last year. More colours, more vibe, more excitement, pumpin' music and spectacular lights with monumental backgound. The event gave me a chance to test my theoretical lessons in low light shooting with slow snyc flash. I'm pleased with the results. However, I wished that I could be there earlier to shoot more portraiture shots as I was rushing from an akad nikah ceremony at Kapar, Klang this evening.
I'd like to thank Chan for the passes that Bob & I used, Bob for exchanging ideas and my guru Adam for teaching my skills that's worth a lifetime.
Below is a snapshot of what I took. Please feel free to browse more images in this entry. Thanks!

After recuperating from my day at the golf course with Trabye, I now managed to share my experience with all of you.
On the 4th of July 2006, Trabye & I, for the first time after we got tired of just hitting balls at the range, head for the greens. With total enthusiasm from both of us, we head for the 18-hole pitch-n-put course at the Guthrie Golf Academy, Bukit Jelutong. The green fees was so cheap. RM 20 for a 9-hole round and RM 30 for a full 18-hole par 3 course. We couldn't resist the the temptation to hit it all the way. Neither of us knew that by the time we were hitting the last 9, especially on the last 4, we both couldn't wait to finish the course. Our bodies we aching, my tighs are aching and most of all, I got tire of lugging the golf bag (even more reason to get a new lighter bag...heh heh...like OGIO).Well, at the end of the day, as Trabye said, " ...we did it all, OB, water hazard, bunkers, green in one, bogeys, double bogeys, triple bogeys, the elusive par, slice, hook... and it was good!"
I now have a new profound respect to those professional golfers who can play all day the full course. Can't wait for the next game!
Please note that the photos are courtesy of Trabye, shot with his camera phone. Perhaps next time, I'll lug my 10D with the other golf bag with irons weighting in total about 10kgs+. Yeah right. . I should take my own advice "Travel light" and just bring a half-set next time.
Read Trabye's blog here.

Shooting Against The Light

I've been trying to shoot against the light, or for another reason, to shoot with the light for quite some time. Until last weekend, I managed to really grasp the concept.
How I did it:
1. I metered the background to make sure it is more or less correctly exposed and fired a test shot without flash. (1/200s f2.2)
2. When I got the background correctly exposed, I fired another shot with the flashgun pointed directly at the subject and tested some with bounce fill-in.
Here's what I got:

Studio portraiture anytime anywhere.
|
|
I started wedding photography with the Mak Andam's packages. Some people might diss it. I do too sometimes for the cheap prices they put on photographers. When I think about it, I can't diss it because this is where I learn a lot about wedding photography. Instead, I'm thankful that I started there. It is where I learned a lot about photography, because each and everytime, I was thrown-in to shoot at various location conditions from small wooden houses with static drains where the walls are as wide as the pelamins, to bungalows with parking for 10 cars. Now, I love shooting kampung weddings. There's just so much joy and activity. A lot of expressions and moments. The somewhat chaotic scenes are just a pleasure for any pasionate photographers to shoot.
The Mak Andam's requirements are high, but with a budget price tag . They wanted studio portraitures with various backgrounds. Sometimes making a kampung shoot look like they're in Korea or the Swiss Alps. Furthermore, they really want to see that you have a set of studio lights (on location) plus backdrops.
Yes, to start-off, I did bring a set of 300W studio light with 1 backdrop and stands. I was excited in the 1st place. But after a few weddings lugging the heavy cargo, and setting up the softboxes that took 20-40 mins including light tests in all, I said that was it. No more.
I spent quite a number of hours researching on the internet, referring to other photographers of various specialities such as photojournalists, paparazzis, fashion photographers and wedding photographers around the world on what their workflow and gear was. In the end, I saw light at the end of the tunnel and came up with the current lighting kit that I have now. It's no secret and I did not invent this. I'm just merely adapting ideas that has been done before. At the end of the day, it works for me.
Now, when I go to shoot weddings, I've got only 1 bag on my shoulder with my camera & lenses and my hands with 1 light stand and umbrella. The image below shows my typical workflow of an on-location portraiture shot:

Wedding Panorama

This was one of my first wedding panorama experiment. It was during Rostam & Wanni's wedding on 19-MAR-2006. Yeah, that was quite a long time ago. Anyways, here it is:

Kids at wedding

Most of the occasions, during my wedding assignment, I get kids asking me to photograph them. These kids in particular were eager for their photos to be taken at one of my wedding photo shoot. They kept begging me for "Abang, tolong tangkap satu gambar kitorang. Satu la...tolong la..." ( Please take a photo of us, please.). I took three frames and this one is the only one where I can fit them all in. They kept moving about and it was difficult to keep them still. I'll upload more "kids-during weddings" images in this entry soon. For now, this will do. Thanks!

Candid Syndrome Forum 1st Gathering

Saiful Nang, thanks for organising this first gathering. Memang penuh bermakna.
Most importantly, thank you for your 2 cents regarding the marketing & essence of the wedding photography business dan bual2 lepas the formal session mlm smlm, bersama Isfan & partner dan Bob(Razali). You really answered all my questions clearly. I really appreciate it. Sekarang, jalan saya sudah terang dan jelas.
To Isfan & Naomi, ni aku posting dengan gambar avatar skali, so boleh la ingat muka.
To Bob, thanks for the lift dengan superbike kau. Tanpa superbike kau, we won't be on time.
To MissJay & Pian, tak sangka rumah korang dekat USJ gak. Lain kali boleh bual panjang lagi.
To Adi, thanks for sharing your insight on the Sigma 10-20 lens and its capabilities. Sekarang boleh la nak decide antara Sigma 10-20 ataupun Tokina 12-24.
To Razak, 1D MkII kau...pergh...speachless beb. Tapi most importantly, mungkin kalau ada masa, kita boleh bual lagi pasal press photography. Something that I don't know about at the moment.
To roodee (orang pertama saya berbual di gathering ni bersama Bob), all the best untuk wedding photography shoot kau yg akan datang.
Especially yang lain-lain tu, mintak maaf kalau tak ingat nama. Slow-slow kita berkenalan, ok.
Thanks & all the best utk semua!

Indoor Portraiture
|
|
I've had a difficult task in shortlisting the images for print for Mazmi & Affah. Last week's 3 day wedding shoot at Batu Pahat with the assistance of Bob, ended us up in having 2,000+ images to select. Final shortlisted images should be only 360 images for print. In the meantime, for Mazmi & Affah, I attached here a sneak preview of what is to come in the final album. Sorry for the delay.

A fellow photographer associate of mine once posted on his fotopages http://razalihassan.fotopages.com regarding shooting weddings with a lomo camera. My answer to his question is the image below (Yes! we can! and why not?):

Nani & Karim

Baru nak pegi print photos for Nani & Karim punya wedding. Tapi kedai gambar punya machine rosak lak...Kena tunggu esok.
Anyway, tahniah kepada Nani & Karim setelah selamat diijab kabulkan pada 18-NOV-2005. Hari majilis kenduri kahwin esoknya cukup meriah dengan gelakat keluarga musikal. Bapa pengantin bermain keyboard, bersama adik Nani mendendangkan beberapa buah lagu. Sungguh menarik.
