Sue & Lan's wedding portraiture
|
|
It's been a while since I last did portraitures. Technically, this time I experimented with just 1 flash (Note the flash catch light in the eyes) with an umbrella reflector. It took a few frames to get the right expression of both Sue & Lan.
Regarding the subject matter, I shot a few frames to get the right expression from Sue & Lan. Sue's expression was relatively easy to get because she's already used to the camera during one session of 3 wedding dresses photo shoot on the day before this shoot. I wanted to portray the "confidence" character in her smile. The cheeky smile that says, "Hey, watch out. I've got my guardian angel by my side."
Lan, in the meantime was good at smiling, so there was no problem. However, for this shot, I wanted to portray his "smile" through his eyes more than his smile. I asked him to just look to his left and just imagine their honeymoon. So, I got eyes that say "Man, I'm the luckiest man on earth, and the happiest one today!" without even saying it.
There you go. Enjoy!

Sue & Lan's wedding
|
|
Client: Sue & Lan
Location: Kg. Pandan
Date: 26 & 27-AUG-2006
It's been a while since I last updated my fotopages. It's been really busy lately, with lots of things to get done. I'm currently streamlining my services and rates, as well as planning for expansion in the near future. As for today, I could only upload one image for the day. Hopefully I'll be able to complete this entry soon. Enjoy.
To Sue & Lan,
Thanks for the hospitality you both gave. Your wedding was great! I'm still full from the reception lunch.

Low light, high ceiling? No problem.
|
|
Shooting in venues with low light and high ceiling seems to be some of photographers' worst nightmare. I came accross a few photographers who asked me how to shoot in these venues where bouncing the flash is just as absurd as pointing the torchlight to light the plane in the sky. Without further due, below is a tutorial I've prepared regarding this topic:

Jue & Hadi wedding portraiture
|
|
Client : Jue & Hadi
Date : 5-AUG-2006
Location : Bukit Naga, Shah Alam
First of all, congratulations to Jue & Hadi on their wedding day. It was a simple wedding yet very nice. I wish you both a prosperous life together.
Though I prefer to shoot wedding portraits with natural light, I don't deny that shooting with studio lights give me the thrill to see the outcome of the photos I shoot. With studio lights, the outcome of the images shot is not the same as what you see during the session. The light is manipulated, or somewhat controlled. Therefore, one needs to visualise the final result and with a basic understanding of how the strobes work, execute the photo shoot.
Though I no longer carry heavy studio lights, with my mini portable studio lighting system, I managed to capture these images below with 1 unit of speedlight on the right side of the subject and the other side lighted with none the other, the trusted natural light coming from the window.
For photographers: How to meter?
1. Take a meter reading for the scene without flash. In this case 1/60s f2.8 ISO 400 (EXIF for the 1st image on the top).
2. To darken the background, I stopped down to 1/100s f2.8 ISO 400 (EXIF for the 1st image on the top). This gives a darker background with a decent light from the window on the left side of the subject.
3. Fill the shadows on the right of the subject with off-camera flash devices such as an off-flash camera cord or a wireless transmitter & trigger (such as PocketWizard). For this setting, I used 1/8th power at 24mm zoom and placed the flash approximately 1.5 metres 45 degrees from the subject.
Note: For the single portrait shots, I use aperture setting of f5 to get more detailed images. Ideally I should shoot at f8 and above to capture more detail. However, my portable flash is not powerful enough to get a reading at f8, so, f5 would do for this shot. The 2 portrait images was shot at 1/50s f5.0 ISO 400 with 1/8th power flash.
So, here it is, enjoy and happy shooting:

More than a picture
|
|
It's been a while since I last updated this entry. Quite recently I was previlaged to be given the chance to be one of the photographers at Yuni & Shafiq's reception at the Dewan Perdana Felda. It was a wonderful event and I was really satisfied of the outcome. Complex mixed lighting, low ambient light and high ceilings are a nightmare to some photographers . I love situations like this because it forces me to think of new solutions (quickly) and shoot in new perspectives.
To Yuni & Shafiq, thank you and again, congratulations!
To those who patiently follow my updates, here it is:
Note: Yuni giving a short speech while Shafiq awaits the cake cutting ceremony. In the background is a live video feed of the couple.
Note:Shafiq & Yuni listening to the emcee greeting the guests.

Yuni & Shafiq's Nikah Ceremony
|
|
Client: Yuni & Shafiq
Location: Dewan Perdana Felda
Date: 19-JUL-2006
This couple is a perfect match for each other. They were very generous with their smile and laughter that it was just such a joy to capture their beautiful moments on their big day on camera. Yuni's bubbly character just lights up the place. It was a joyful event and one to remember.
To Yuni & Shafiq, congratulations to both of you!
Note: Yuni is just a natural for her portraiture shot.
Note: To warm up the session and to get both Shafiq and Yuni relaxed, I asked Shafiq to blow hard into Yuni's ears. I guess it tickles her much that both of them ended up laughing to their ears. This emotion was what I was looking for, and I got it. Thanks guys!

I wanted to get a snapshot of Hanafie & Nurul Huda tossing the dry leaves in air. To achieve that, I burst my shots at 3fps and got these sequence. Images are still fresh and I haven't selected the best shot yet from a series of tossing and picking up the leaves.
To Hanafie & Nurul Huda, congratulations on your wedding day! You both were great! I love photographing both of you. I'm sure both you and I can't wait to see the final images.

Majlis Akad Nikah Rusni & Dandy
|
|
Client: Rusni & Dandy
Location: Seksyen 20, Shah Alam
The original plan was to have an outdoor photo session right after the Akad Nikah ceremony. Unfortunately, by the time we got out of the Mosque, it was 6.15pm. With a small nikah reception afterwards at Rusni's place with some delicious food (thank you Rusni & Dandy! ), it was already 6.30pm. The sun was going down and the haze did not help at all.
So, what do we do when the weather bails out on us? Plan B! We shoot indoors Mind you, the first few pictures were taken in a tight bedroom space with my 50mm for a sense of depth.
To Rusni & Dandy, we'll give it another shot on Sunday's reception day. All the best for all of us!

Colgate Smile!
|
|
Client: Norzila & Hamli
Date: 07-JULY-2006
Location: Kapar, Klang
It's not always easy to capture a genuine smile/laugh from my subjects. At the same time, it is not always hard. Just picture the TV commercial "Colgate Smile!" where the kids show off their smile and you'll be laughing. To get a shot of the perfect moment with the smile, I took at least 9 frames at the same time making silly comments to get them laughing. The result: Truly beautiful expressions that came from the heart.
For Hamli & Norzila:
Congratulations on you both! It was my pleasure being your official photographer for your akah nikah ceremony. You both were great!
