Petronas Twin Tower

I was on assignment to shoot Menara TA opposite of this building. The image below is one of the most photographed shot of the towers. Nevertheless, I just gave it a go and see how I did. It's hard to get a creative angle of the towers, so before the rain falls on me, I thought what the hey, I'll take this boring one for my collection, especially on a heavy cloudy evening. Been there, done that. The image below was shot at ISO100, 4s f11 at approximately 7.40 pm.

Penang Trip

Went to Penang last weekend & got this shot during a walk in Chowrasta area. Street tailors like this is very rare in KL now. The tailor is working part time after his office hours at the City Council. He works the whole day during weekends. He has a shop shared with his brother upstairs at the bazaar, however, despite the distinct urine smell from the nearby drain, he says that traffic is good here.

Near Chowrasta area, I stopped by for Laksa at one of the stalls. I managed to shoot this frame of the owner of the laksa stall owner prouring the laksa soup into the bowls while his son helps filling in the ingredients and dressing. Business is good as the traffic is high near Chowrasta in Georgetown. The laksa is great, especially for those who love a spicy tint of hot chilli.

Here's the Laksa, ready to serve. Fast, quick, hot and as real as it gets.

Gambar balack&white ni memang menarik dan Pulau Pinang memang banyak tempat menarik kalu kita nak shoot picture style street photography nie.. well done.. Mon 1-Jan-2007 11:25

Bro Azhar.......

Nice Black and White .

Do try Illford 3200....digital grain can't beat film grain ......You can get Delta 3200 at Keat Camera at Jalan Pudu.

All the best.

Thanks for the lead on Ilford 3200. Will definitely give it a go after this. I'm still waiting for the right moment to call you and say "OK, I'm ready to buy your OM-1n" Heh heh... . In the meantime, I'll keep shooting. Thanks again! Fri 9-Feb-2007 18:12

Maya & Moazam's wedding

Client: Maya & Moazam
Location: Tmn Ibu Kota, KL
Date: 2-DEC-2006

For the first time, my favorite shot in this wedding is one of the guests, who happens to be Maya's cousin-in-law, En. Amin. I've always wanted a shot like this, where in the middle of the crowd's rushing here and there, emerges one subject that is calm & tranquil, opposite of the surroundings. Here, En. Amin is facing the door from this hallway. The ceiling at this level is low. I burned the sides and top of the foreground to remove the distractions.

Here's another tranquil moment that I wanted to portray. It's a personal moment between the groom and God, asking for His forgiveness, and blessings at a very private and personal moment.

Yet another moment captured. I like this photo because in this tight frame, I managed to capture the story. The bride, Maya kissing her husband's hands for blessing, while witnessed by close relatives.

Hmm.. for the first time too, my first posting is anything but the bride and groom's smiling faces. How interesting...

hello...thanks for vising my FP.

btw, you got very nice wedding pic too..got your style..

lovely... you capture the moments...
which I seldom missed! Do you burst your exposure or anticipate the next movement/upacara etc? What your tips to capture the moment?
Thu 14-Dec-2006 16:40
Posted by:kijal kijal.blog@gmail.com
Kijal, you've got a good question there. The answer is anticipation. I rarely burst my shots. Mostly because for indoor shots, my flash will not recycle as fast as my camera's 3 frames per second continuous shots. However I do click the shutter as soon as I can after my flash recycles. For this purpose, I try to keep my flash power down for fill-in's rather than pushing it high with +1,+2 or +3 power as much as possible.

2nd answer is, always be ready to shoot. As soon as my eyes spot an interesting moment, my hands are ready to focus & press the shutter. Sometimes, I get blurred images & slightly out of focus images in order to capture that particular moment. But, the point is that the moment wasn't missed. As a matter of fact, I noticed that some of the National Geographic's photographs have some movement in them, with a certain amount of tolerable blurrness. So, I think it's fine.

Hope that helps!

Client: Lim Eng Thiam & Tan Swee Yong
Date: 25-NOV-2006
Location: Melaka

Hi all,

First off, I'd like to congratulate Eng Thiam & Swee Yong on their wedding day. Congratulations! It was a great day with beautiful weather down in Melaka. Sunshining bright with clear blue sky even after it rained in the evening.

I'd also like to thank my fellow photographer Chan (http://www.galleryofcolour.com ) (who still shoots in film negatives and slides. Respect.), for inviting me into his home in Bukit Cina, Melaka, and also for inviting me to assist him on this wonderful wedding assignment. I'd aslo like to thank his brother for the warm hospitality during my short stay in Melaka. Thank you so much Chan!

The wedding started off with just the perfect weather (I'll post some colour prints in here soon) and the fine luck just continued till the wedding dinner last night. I just got back to KL this evening and off-loading my gears and cards. I thought I'd post some images for now which are some of my favorites.

I'll update this post with more images. In the meantime, I've got some serious selection to do in my workstation.

Enjoy!

At the temple, just after the tea ceremony at Swee Yong's place.

Praying for prosperity and longevity.

Making a quick cross accross the street to pray at the opposite temple.

Bro Azhar....

Yes...Agree with Mr Kijai for the 1st image.

For 2nd image...I would go more closer if possible...perhaps from the back still but 45 degree left side. May be tight cropping just slightly above the tulisan Chinese and below the knee ( cropping out that seat over the right - a distraction to me ).

3rd image flat....too messy. Just my Humble opinion

Try more grain 1600 / 3200. Digital grain / noise perhaps .

ps : Do you manage to get a body for your 50mm ?....Willing to sell it to me ?.

Hakam, thanks for ur comments. You're right, a tighter crop for the 2nd image & getting closer would be much better, without the stool on the right. This edit will bring the viewers closer to what the couple is actually doing. Point noted.

As for the lens, I'm still patiently awaiting for my funds to grow to get a decent OM-1/1n body. BTW, congratulations on your macro work being published in this December's Digital Camera Magazine!

Umi & Hani

Client: Umi & Hani
Date: 19-DEC-2006
Location: Pulau Meranti

The weather was great in the morning. Clear blue sky and I thought that this would be a perfect day for an outdoor shoot after the event. Moreover, their compound was filled with lots of shady trees with some dry leaves. Somewhat like FRIM.

Unfortunately, during the reception lunch, it was was raining cats and dogs. So, I could not possibly force the couple to go out in the puddle and wet their bridal wear just for the shoot. So, I made use of the background at the reception lunch compound to shoot their not-so-outdoor photos. (refer to pic.)

I asked the couple to lean on the railings and shoot them with the trees in the background, and shot the picture at f2.0 to blur out the background with fill-in flash. So, here's what I got:

Citra Soraya model photo shoot

Here's some images I took for Citra Soraya, a cosmetic company for their print ads. These are considered my "director's cut" because these shots were more directed towards fashion & style spreads instead of cosmetic shots. The actual shot for the cosmetic ad was a clean version.

Word out: Modelling portfolio photography services available. I am available for any ladies/gentlemen out there who needs to be photographed for their modelling portfolio. Shooting on location or studio. Those interested kindly call me at 016-6250800 or email azhar.ariff@gmail.com.

Thank you all for your support!

Anyways, here goes (images were cross-processed):

Model: Ann

Model:Lily

Model: Linda

Assalamualaikum Bro Azhar...

Nice set you have here Love the lighting outcome....I guess you are using ring flash or some kind of lighting that produces such round shaped reflected at the eyes.....It lookc a bit scary....what do you think of that ?. Just a humble opinion from me.

ps : If I am not mistaken you didi e - mail me asking for OM-In body....I will e - mail you the images soon. Thanks.

Flat from the top

During a recent file sorting exercise, I came accross this photo that I thought was interesting to post. It's a combination of the subject matter, which was lying flat on the grass and how I took this shot. I wanted a straight shot with the Mazmi & Affah lying down on the grass, so the nearest leverage I could ge was the caterer's plastic chair for the reception. I positioned the legs of the chair in between Mazmi's leg and somehow balanced myself to shoot this picture. For the final image, I cropped it square, burned all sides and used a centre spot filter.

Darkroom output

Barber in Klang awaits customers
Songkok & capal seller in Klang
I just completed my 1st lesson on B&W darkroom with Malaysia's one of the best B&W printer/photographer, Mr Mustafa (better known as Mus). The experience was unbelievable and I am very previlaged and honoured to be able to learn from a very down-to-earth teacher who's generousity in knowledge is as big as the universe.

The subject below is the owner of a local barber shop in Klang. His shop is 55 years old and the condition is rustic. New township in Klang New Town has shifted more customers to the new side of town, leaving the business owners of the old town with very little business.

All shots taken with Nikkormat FTN+Vivitar 28mm f2.8 with Fuji Neopan 400

Below is my first print:

Note:Print, 7"x7", Paper: Kodak Polymax (Multigrade), Magnification=36.5, Base: 23.9s, Burning> Top H/L: +1, Top Right H/L: +2/3, Shirt bottom: 4/4, All sides: +1/4

Workprint plan:

Note: Print, f8/ grade 2 1/2, Base:11.9s, Burning> All Sides:+1/4

Here's my test strip print:

East meets West

Client: Akin & David
Reception: 3-SEP-2006
Venue: Ritz Carlton & Dewan Merak Kayangan

Thank you Akin & David for trusting me to become your official photographer on your big day. I just thought that I'd post some teaser images of what to come in your final album. You both were great. The marvelous event unfolded itself and all I did was document it in photography, as is. Enjoy your honeymoon and see you soon!

To keen photographers who follow my updates, for your information, during this event, I just let go all the technical mumbo jumbo and shot the wedding as is. No setup, no nothing, just pure documentation as is. What was going through my mind at that time was only one thing: "Capture the moment and don't miss any shots".

1. Asraf, thanks for viewing Akin's entry. I don't have your e-mail to reply to.

2. Fir, thanks for your comments. They are from London, but Akin's family is in KL.
