Chinese Opera: Behind the Curtains
|
|
A few months back, we shot an assignment documenting what goes on behind the curtains of a Chinese Opera. Chinese Opera is a popular form of drama and musical theatre originated fromChina. There are numerous regional branches of opera with its original root starting in the dynastic periods. This performing group was performing in Ampang Jaya for a few days before moving on to Singapore. A few days before their performance in Ampang Jaya, they've performed in Jalan Ipoh theatre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
What's amazing is that the actors are not only performing, make-up, dressings and costumes are done by themselves. There's a lot of commitment and passion given to their performance and I was so amazed how they could be two different person in a split second. Check out behind the curtains images below. Alternatively check out
For photographers, all images are taken with:
Canon EOS 20D + Tamron 17-50 f2.8, Shot at ISO 800, with two aperture settings of either f2.8 (for depth of field) and f4 (for wide angle shots), available light, no-flash.
Looking back at these images, makes me think twice to stick with Canon. But then again, the Nikon D300 could do better. Ha ha..!

Baru process gambar escalator. Ni saya pakai effect "cross-processing". Tapi sikit je dalam 50%, jadi tak la sampai sama 100% macam gambar yg keluar dari kamera LOMO. Elemen besi dominan dalam gambar ni (escalator), jadi saya nak buat gambar ni ada feel "cold" sikit. Sebab tu pakai effect ni. Tapi dalam "kesejukan" tu, subject couple ni-lah yang "warm up" the environment. Jadi ada contrast subject & environment.
Untuk shot ni, saya & Zuhrie berterima kasih kat Kerol kerana tolong pastikan "line-clear" untuk kami shoot. Terima kasih gak kat Bob yang stanby check "line-clear" kat atas escalator. Ni kan experiment, next time, kita akan tulis surat mintak full access to shoot kat LRT area ni. Syok shoot kat LRT ni, aircon kuat, so talent pun tak penat. Kita pun selesa. Heh he...
So, camera setting ialah: ISO 800, 1/80s f4.
Ni satu lagi gambar kat terowong KTM. Macam Kerol kata, ni pakai 2 light. satu kat kiri, belakang couple, untuk rim light nak mencahayakan rambut diorang dari belakang, dan satu lagi main light dari kanan 45 degree depan Mohsin & Shida. ISO800 1/60s f5.6 + 1/16th power light manual at 50mm

Konsep: "Urban Outdoor Wedding"
Keterangan: Kami nak "isolate"kan couple pengantin daripada environment, and to show that when they're together, the world is just the two of them, in their own bubble. The only thing that matters is just them.
Sebelum apa-apa,
Major Credits go to:
1. Zuhrie (for organising this outing, dari cari talent, baju & logistics)
3. Azlie (make-up artist & stylist, yang made sure the models are ready for shoot)
4. Bob (production assistant, orang kuat grip light)
5. Kerol/kielliena (production assistant, orang kuat behind the scenes & angkat beg lighting)
6. Andaman Adreen http://andamanadreen.fotopages.com for the wardrobe yang dipakai oleh Mohsin & Shida
Equipment:
1. 2 x Canon 550 EX, trigged with china-made radio transmitters & receivers+lightstand.
2. Camera + lens biasa masing2.
3. Polaris lightmeter.
Nak cakap banyak tak tau, jadi ni saya posting dulu first set of processed images.
Ni Zuhrie, tengah shoot. Background is OCBC Building di sebelah Masjid Jamek, KL. Pakai 1 light, dipegang oleh orang kuat kami, Bob.
ISO200, 1/125s, f10 + flash tak ingat, tapi rasanya 1/16th power at 50mm zoom.
Ni set gambar kat background merah. Mcm Zuhrie punya set.
Ni gambar "behind the scenes", masa shoot background merah. Kalau perasan, kami pakai satu light sahaja. Dan beg raket badminton/tennis cap "apacs" (2nd hand) biru kat lantai dekat light tu lah beg lighting kit kami. Sempoi je. Travel light. Zuhrie (baju hitam tengah) tgh review gambar, Kielliena (kerol) tgh shoot (kiri) sementara Bob standby dengan light.
Ni gambar kat background jalur-jalur. Credits to Zuhrie. Ni idea dia nak shoot for the shadows daun-daun.
Ni dia "behind the scenes". Location selebet, tapi gambar cun. Shoot pakai ambient light sahaja kat tepi tong sampah.
Apa kami posting kat sini adalah untuk men"demonstrate"kan bahawa dengan sedikit kreativiti sahaja, kita boleh tukar any bad location to a fantastic outdoor location untuk wedding photoshoot kita.
Ni dia crew NINJA kami. Minum jap sebelum next session naik LRT.
Dari kiri: Bob, Zuhrie, Mohsin, Shida, Azlie, Kerol(Kielliena)
Ni saya posting lagi sket gambar sekitar Masjid Jamek.
Last kopek lintas jalan sebelum break for next session. "Mengharungi segalanya bersama ke masa hadapan"

Amy
|
|
This is one of the series from Amy & Azmi's wedding. Yes, I know, the fella at the background shouldn't be there. I've only got a 15 minute window for some off-camera flash setup after this shot. We we're walking towards the end of the alley to the portraiture location and I stopped Amy for a while for a quick photo.
Shot with Canon 20D+50mm f1.8 lens only.
ISO200, 1/5000s f1.8
Here's another shot of Amy & Azmi, right next to Amy's shop.

Amy & Azmy outdoor portraiture
|
|
Recently I got a very good opportunity to shoot an outdoor portrait of Amy & Azmi during their wedding. The ceremony was held at their shop lot in Pandamaran, Klang. These pictures were taken just after their "makan" session and before they change to another dress for the cake cutting ceremony. I only have a window of 15 minutes, and I took these shots (plus some other unpublished shots in 10 minutes). These images were taken on the back alley, where the actual reception took place. See it to believe it. I love it!
Amy's portrait. Lookin' good.

Azmi's portrait
My setup.
It's so simple. Bare Canon 550EX on a lightstand, trigged by China made radio triggers.
A view of the back alley. Not so pretty eh? I love the textures along this alley. There's so much of them!

Ada tiga(3) participants this time, Kerol, Azmiman & Mamoza. Kami akan cuba inform at least 1-2 weeks in advance, pada masa hadapan.
Anda nampak semua setup kami. Yang ni 2x Canon 550EX triggered by China Radio flash triggers. Food diletakkan dlm DIY light tent.
Kerol shoot, sementara saya pegang colour chart.
Space Hillside Corner Cafe ni sesuai untuk workshop begini, luas dan privacy kat basement area. Operations cafe masih berjalan di tingkat atas.

Photographing Fine Art at The National Art Gallery.
|
|
For those who's been wondering, where did I go? Why this blog is so quiet for a while? The answer is that we've been on commercial assignments for quite a while. Last week, we covered the Global Battle of The Bands (GBOB) 2007 Malaysia competition. This week, it's all about photographing fine art.
Photographing artworks is not an easy task. It's very delicate work and require extensive tools and time. There's a lot to portray such as texture, some reflections need to be seen and some don't, depth, colour and many other technical stuff. I try to keep my gears to a minimalist setup, but we had to bring out our strobes anyway. Some work requires more than two(2) lights, etc. But most importantly is colour. All artwork photographs come with a colour chart and a white balance card for colour correction. Check it out.
Our colour reference:
My photography associate, Hatizal, photographing the work while I'm taking my time out photographing "the making of..."

Yesterday, my associate Hatizal & I was on assignment to photograph the Maybank Annual General Meeting 2007 event, alongside with the video team from IN-VID, lead by my friend Amron Roni, former TV9 producer. Here's our group shot at the end of the event. Event pics will be uploaded later.
